I've had this idea for a while now..I was inspired by a painting I saw at an art fair in my town a month ago. I had a bit of trouble designing the creature, but basically this is the end result.
The creature is unnamed, and wanders the water routes that traders and travelers cross most often. It collects light in the strand it carries. If you come across it on your way to the neighboring country across the passage, you must pay it a fee of light as a toll, otherwise it will not let you cross. It strikes fear in many people due to it's size and powerful-godlike appearance, but many monks and religious elders travel the rivers and straits looking for it with offerings of light, as they honor the creature for being a beacon of hope on dark nights.
I don't know that I can really put a finger on it, but every time I look at this image I have to stop and stare at it for a few minutes. Subtle things like a horizon line that isn't visible, but you can tell it's there anyway; a reflection just obscured by the mist, and the mystery of a creature that is huge, weightless, but not fully defined... I don't know. Good stuff, though...
Just treated myself to a print of this, I requested it as such a while ago and I'm so happy you decided to put it up for print Excited to recieve it now
